  7. CodeNet-8341 PC interface card provides a high-performance, fiber optic link to
  8. an Ethernet network segment, based upon the IEEE 10BASE-FL standard, which is
  9. backwards compatible with the earlier Fiber Optic Inter Repeater Link (FOIRL)
  10. standard. The CodeNet 10BASE-F/FOIRL network is completely immune to
  11. electromagnetic noise and no form of cable damage, like short circuits, ground
  12. faults, reflections, or impedance mismatches, can disable the network. Fiber
  13. optic networks provide unparalleled security, since there is no electronic
  14. radiation to tap. Workstations can be up to 2 kilometers apart in both
  15. point-to-point and star configurations. Many MultiStar active hubs and CodeStar
  16. passive hubs can be connected together to create LANs supporting thousands of
  17. computers in a single network. Codenet-8341 10BASE-FL/FOIRL cards are
  18. compatible with other FOIRL or 10BASE-FL products and can be used with other
  19. manufacturers' concentrators and repeaters
  20.  
  21. The CodeNet-8341 achieves higher performance because of its 16K buffer memory
  22. architecture and an 8-bit/16-bit bus interface. Since this memory buffer is
  23. dual-ported and directly accessed by the PC, the PC simply uses ``move string''
  24. instruction to move data to and from the buffer in the same way it moves data
  25. around its own memory. Like other Codenoll Ethernet and FDDI adapters, the
  26. CodeNet-8341 comes complete with an UNIX Streams network driver
  27.  
  28. Because of fiber's large bandwidth and resulting data transmission capacity,
  29. the network has a long life expectancy. Newer, faster network standards, like
  30. FDDI, use the same fiber as Codenoll fiber optic Ethernet networks.
